Middle East

Although not technically part of South Asia, the Middle East is closely related, and many political issues span both regions.  This section covers current issues and crises in the Middle East region
Date Event Summary
25 April 2002 The biggest success of Israel has been in making the world forget what it has always been about... "I don't know something called International Principles. I vow that I'll burn every Palestinian child (that) will be born in this area. The Palestinian woman and child is more dangerous than the man, because the Palestinian childs existence infers that generations will go on, but the man causes limited danger. I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing him. With one hit I've killed 750 Palestinians (in Rafah in 1956). I wanted to encourage my soldiers by raping Arabic girls as the Palestinian women is a slave for Jews, and we do whatever we want to her and nobody tells us what we shall do but we tell others what they shall do." [Ariel Sharon, current Prime Minister, In an interview with General Ouze Merham, 1956]
21 April 2002 Something stinks in Jenin There is full agreement between all those who were in the Jenin refugee camp on only one thing. A week after the end of the fighting, foreign journalists and IDF soldiers, UN representatives and hired hacks in the Israeli media, members of the welfare organizations and government propagandists all report that a terrible stench of decomposing bodies lingers everywhere. Apart from that there is no agreement on anything
17 April 2002 Amid the ruins of Jenin, the grisly evidence of a war crime A monstrous war crime that Israel has tried to cover up for a fortnight has finally been exposed. Its troops have caused devastation in the centre of the Jenin refugee camp, reached yesterday by The Independent, where thousands of people are still living amid the ruins.
17 April 2002 War and diplomacy in West Asia THE SHUTTLE DIPLOMACY of the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, in war-torn West Asia at this time has run into a tempest of political fury over human tragedies on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide. If Israel thinks that it holds the upper hand in the war itself, the beleaguered Palestinians have succeeded in turning the international spotlight towards their basic political cause — the quest for a viable state of their own.
03 April 2002 Urgent: Eyewitness report from Ramallah Ramallah, Occupied Palestine -- My name is Tzaporah Ryter. I am an American student from the University of Minnesota. I currently am in Ramallah. We are under a terrible siege and people are being massacred by both the Israeli army and armed militia groups of Israeli settlers. They are shooting outside at anything that moves. I am urgently pleading for as much outside help as possible to help save lives here.
